Do you need an Enterprise licence? How far you can go with Odoo Community

18 July 2026·6 min read

For most business owners the word "ERP" first brings a price tag to mind: a monthly licence per user, annual renewal, rising cost. But that is not the only way to set up a business system. You can go a long way with Odoo Community without paying for licences — provided it is set up properly.

What is the difference between Community and Enterprise?

Odoo comes in two editions. Community is open source and free; it includes most of the core, such as sales, purchasing, inventory, manufacturing (MRP), project and CRM. Enterprise adds a paid layer: some ready-made accounting features, Studio (customisation without code), certain ready-made apps and official support.

The critical point is this: most of what Enterprise adds has an equivalent or an alternative on the Community side. The difference lies not in "can it be done" but in "how is it done".

Enterprise is a convenience, not a luxury. With the right partner you can build most of that convenience without paying for licences.

How far does Community go?

So what is the risk?

The price of Community is not a licence but the need for a proper implementation. A Community system put together with the wrong add-ons and haphazard patches never feels settled — especially on the accounting side. That is a problem of setup, not of edition. This is why Community is the most economical option in the right hands and the most frustrating in the wrong ones.

Our approach

As a studio we use Odoo Community ourselves: we run our own business on it. We implement it in different sectors, from precast manufacturing to engineering firms, with no licence cost and with the data and the system remaining entirely the customer's property. Where needed, we expand it in phases.
