Why does open source software matter, and where is it heading?

25 July 2026·7 min read

Underneath most of the software you use are projects whose code is open to everyone. Much of the web, the systems on your phone, business ERPs — all of them stand on the shoulders of open source. So why does that matter, and what does it mean for a company?

What open source is, briefly

Open source software is software whose source code is public: it can be inspected, modified and distributed. With closed (licensed) software you buy the box and cannot look inside. With open source the bonnet is up — you can develop it yourself or with a team and adapt it to your company.

Why does it matter for businesses?

No licence fees

You do not pay an annual licence per user. For growing teams in particular, that is a serious difference in cost. The money goes into fitting the system to your business, not into licences.

Independence — not being tied to a vendor

With closed software, if the vendor raises prices, discontinues the product or drops support, you have no options left (this is called "vendor lock-in"). With open source the code is yours; you can carry on with a different team if you wish. The fate of your system does not rest on the goodwill of a single company.

Transparency and security

People assume closed code is more secure, but the opposite is true: open code reviewed by thousands of people is code in which security holes are spotted and closed faster. You can also see where and how your data is processed.

Ownership and customisation

Does your business have a need of its own? With open source, a developer can go into the system and build a module that does exactly what you need. With a closed product you have to settle for "that feature isn't available".

Open source is not just "free software"; it means control of your system stays with you.

A concrete example: Odoo

In the business world, one of the best examples is Odoo. The Odoo Community edition is open source: you can set up a full business ERP without paying for licences, develop modules specific to your company and keep your data under your own control. Hundreds of companies shape the same software to their own needs — nobody tells you "you can't go beyond this package".

The future: AI and open source

Open source is becoming more important, not less. The age of AI has made this even clearer: open-weight AI models let organisations run AI on their own infrastructure without handing their data to anyone else. For organisations that want transparent, auditable and independent systems running on their own servers rather than relying on cloud monopolies, open source is turning from a preference into a necessity.

In short, the future belongs not to closed boxes but to organisations that keep control and own their data and their systems.

We build business systems on open source (Odoo in particular) — solutions with no licence fees, where the code and the data are entirely yours.
