What Are B2B Marketplaces and Why Do They Matter?
The classic ways of finding new customers are trade fairs, referrals and cold calls — all slow and expensive. B2B marketplaces put you straight into a ready-made market where thousands of buyers are looking for products. So what exactly do they do, and do they make sense for your company?
What is a B2B marketplace?
B2C marketplaces (Amazon, eBay) sell to end consumers. B2B marketplaces are built for business-to-business trade: wholesalers, manufacturers, importers and distributors meet there. You list your products; buyers from all over the world search and send you a request for quotation (RFQ).
What do they do for you?
Immediate access to an existing pool of buyers
Instead of building a market from scratch, you appear in front of buyers who are already searching for products on that platform. A manufacturer that has never sold outside its home country can start receiving enquiries from Europe and the Middle East within a few weeks.
A foundation of trust
The buyer may not know you, but they know the platform. Verified supplier badges, reviews and the platform's guarantees lower the trust barrier in a new trading relationship.
Low cost of entry
For the cost of attending one trade fair, you can be visible on a marketplace for a whole year. The risk of trying it out is low.
Leading platforms
- Alibaba — the largest B2B marketplace worldwide, especially for Asian and global buyers.
- Europages — a strong supplier directory for buyers based in Europe.
- TradeKey, Made-in-China, ExportHub — alternatives by sector and region.
- National exporter directories and trade platforms — local options run by export associations and chambers of commerce in your country.
The right platform depends on your product and your target market. Telling everyone to "get on Alibaba" is wrong; the right address for a machinery exporter is different from the right one for a textile exporter.
A marketplace makes you findable; but what convinces the buyer and closes the sale is how professional you look.
Marketplace or my own website? Both
This is not an either/or choice. The strongest setup is the two working together:
- Marketplace → a flow of new buyers and the first contact.
- Your own company website → what the buyer sees when they look you up; the place that reinforces trust and carries your brand.
The buyer finds you on the marketplace, then searches for your company on Google. If the website they land on is weak, you lose the interest you won on the marketplace. That is why the two need to be set up together.
We build your export website and also connect the CRM side, so that incoming enquiries (marketplace + website) are collected and followed up in one place.
