Digital Ad Reporting: What Should It Look Like?
You set aside an advertising budget every month. But if all you have to show for it is "this many people saw it, this many clicked", you do not actually know whether your money is working. Good reporting turns advertising from an expense into a measurable investment.
Misleading metrics: impressions and clicks
Most ad reports are full of impression and click counts. They sound good — "our ad reached 200,000 people!" — but on their own they say almost nothing about business results. 200,000 people saw it, but how many contacted you, asked for a quote, bought? That is the real question.
The metrics that really matter
Conversions
How many of the people who saw the ad did what you wanted them to do: filled in a form, called, bought, asked for a quote. If conversions are not measured, the rest of the report is decoration.
Cost per acquisition (CPA)
What does one lead or one sale cost you? If you spent EUR 5,000 and got 10 qualified enquiries, your cost per enquiry is EUR 500. Compare that figure with what you earn from such a customer and it becomes clear whether the advertising makes sense.
Return on ad spend (ROAS)
How much revenue came back for every lira you spent? A ROAS of 4 means EUR 1 of advertising brings in EUR 4 of sales. It is the clearest answer to the question "is the advertising working?"
Advertising you cannot measure, you cannot manage. "It seems to be going well" should be a number, not a feeling.
What does a good report look like?
Good reporting is a decision tool, not a pile of data. It should include:
- Comparison with the target: "We aimed for 30 enquiries this month and got 42." Context, not just a number.
- The conversion funnel: how many impressions → how many clicks → how many enquiries → how many sales. You can see where people drop out.
- Breakdown by channel and campaign: which ad makes money and which one burns budget.
- A plain summary: "What happened this month, where the money went, what we gained, what comes next." Understandable at a glance.
You need the groundwork in place to see whether advertising works
To see these metrics, you have to connect what happens "behind" the ad: conversion tracking (form submissions, calls, purchase events) must be set up on the website, and incoming enquiries must land in a CRM where you can follow whether they turned into sales. Otherwise the ad dashboard shows you clicks, but you will never know whether a click turned into money.
On the digital advertising side we do more than run ads; we set up conversion tracking, reporting and the flow of enquiries into the CRM — so every month you can see clearly where your money went and what it brought back.
