Engineering and contracting firms: see project profit at the start of the job, not at the end
In engineering, automation, electrical/mechanical contracting and energy companies, revenue is clear but profit is often uncertain. That is because profit is determined not by the selling price but by the total of the man-hours, materials and site expenses that go into the job — and those change quietly as the job goes on.
Why does profit come as a surprise?
On a KNX installation, an energy project or a mechanical contracting job:
- The estimate in the quote does not match what happens. The 100 planned hours become 140 on site; nobody notices.
- The material margin melts away. With exchange-rate differences, price changes and waste, the margin in the quote evaporates midway through the job.
- Site expenses are invisible. Travel, lodging and extra labour are charged to the project late, or not at all.
- The result becomes clear at month end. The answer to "did we make money on this job?" arrives too late to change anything.
Learning the profit when the job is finished is accounting. Seeing the profit while the job is running is management.
Managing project profitability live
A properly set-up system puts the plan made at quoting time side by side with the reality coming in from the field:
Quote = profit plan
Every quote is recorded with its man-hours, material cost and target margin. So the quote is also the profit plan for that project.
Actuals flow in from the field
Hours worked, expenses entered and materials used come into the system from the field. The faster the bridge between field and office, the fresher the data.
A plan-versus-actual dashboard
Planned margin against actual margin, planned man-hours against man-hours spent, compared on one screen. If the project is going off the rails, you see it before it is finished.
What does this make possible?
- Which project is profitable and which is losing money — data, not guesswork.
- Seeing which types of job keep losing you margin, and correcting the price.
- Stepping in early on a running project and stopping the loss before it grows.
